High-speed networking--explained

Tap into the power of ATM and MPLS technology with this definitive guide. Focusing on practical application over theory, this book combines background information with detailed treatment of all key areas of ATM and MPLS technology--making this an essential resource. You'll find details on the topologies, protocols, and services used in today's digital communications networks, and read provocative predictions about how ATM and MPLS might evolve. Detailed, informative, and comprehensive, this is the ultimate resource for understanding and working with this essential and powerful networking technology.

This book will help you to:

Understand basic communications networking principles, including circuits, multiplexing, and switching Work with both connection-oriented and connectionless protocols such as frame relay and IP Understand how ATM and MPLS support IP, data services, voice and video Discover the main application of MPLS in support of IP traffic engineering, as wells as network-based VPNs, and support of multiple services using tunneling Use traffic management, Quality of Service (QoS), and congestion control Become familiar with critical concepts of IP routed networks and LANs Learn about business drivers and the general architecture required for voice over packet networks Understand how to apply network management and performance measurement

Important topics include:

Technology enablers and trends Time division multiplexing and N-ISDN Connection-oriented data protocols--X.25 and frame relay Ethernet LANs, bridging ATM and B-ISDN standards IP and MPLS standards MPLS and ATM routing and signaling Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) Network and performance management

About the Author

Dr. David E. McDysan (Herndon, VA) has been on the board of the ATM Forum, and has led technical committees on network management and traffic management. He is acknowledged as an industry expert in ATM traffic management, giving tutorials by invitation at several conferences a year. He speaks at conferences or seminars on ATM, MPLS and IP. Dr. McDysan co-authored ATM- Theory and Application. Dave Paw (Tulsa, OK) is an architectural engineering role for the development and specification of WorldCom's Next Generation Networks. He worked on the signalling and routing protocols for WorldCom's ATM and Frame Relay networks, where he was responsible for developing WorldCom's PNNI requirements specification. He is currently responsible for documenting the WorldCom MPLS requirements specification and the application of MPLS and PNNI protocols to the Optical transport network. He is an active in the ATM Forum (Vice-Chair of the control signaling working group). Dave graduated from Texas Tech, Lubbock TX with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
